About Us
Overview
General Surgeons Australia (GSA) was founded in 1999 and its Constitution was ratified in June 2000. With the support of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) Council, GSA was formed as an independent association that would assume the functions of the RACS Division of General Surgery, as they relate to the practice of Specialist General Surgery in Australia.
The purpose of the society is to provide a strong voice and representation for all Specialist General Surgeons in Australia. In 2007, GSA has a membership of over 500 surgeons practicing mainly in Australia, but also overseas.
GSA membership is offered to all duly qualified and recognised Specialist General Surgeons practicing in Australia, and all Specialist General Surgery trainees.
The GSA Board of Management is currently comprised of representatives from specialty interest groups of General Surgery, including Breast, Endocrine, Hepatopancreaticobiliary, Upper Gastrointestinal, Head and Neck, Oncology, Trauma, and Rural surgery, as well as Specialist General Surgeons.
GSA maintains close links with RACS, and is committed to promoting both high quality training and the continuing professional development of GSA members.
GSA wishes to maintain a close association with all specialty societies and interest groups that comprise Specialist General Surgery. All such groups are considered to be autonomous in relation to GSA, and are of equal standing.
The core business of GSA relates to issues of the wider public and the Specialist General Surgical community. It does not relate to the functionality of such specialty societies and interest groups.
